WorldCom betreibt u. a. das weltweit größte Internet-Datennetz, über das rd. 30 % des internationalen Datenverkehrs fließen, und gilt als einer der wichtigsten Anbieter von Orts- und Fernsprechverbindungen. Im Juli 2002 musste das hochverschuldete Unternehmen Konkurs anmelden und einräumen, dass in den letzten Jahren Bilanzmanipulationen vorgenommen worden waren.
